The International Workshop on Genomic Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (GEID Philippines 2017) organized by the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) of UP in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) opened yesterday, 4 June 2017, at the Institute of Biology in UP Diliman. Seven UP researchers in the fields of biomedical sciences, mathematics, environmental sciences and geology, and sustainability have been recognized in the 2017 edition of Asian Scientist 100. National Scientist Lourdes Cruz is most cited researcher from UP

National Scientist and UP Professor Emeritus Lourdes Cruz has the most number of publications with the highest impact among UP researchers. This was according to the Webometrics Ranking of Scientists in Philippine Institutions released in January 2017. The list is a BETA ranking based on the researcher’s presence in the Google Scholar Citations database. It includes the top 453 scholars in the Philippines–267 of them from UP–with h-indices of at least five. Putri Anak is a new Komedya produced by the UP College of Music and the UP Center for International Studies that explores Filipino pre-colonial and colonial heritage through oral literature, music and the San Dionisio Komedya performance tradition. Named after the heroine around whom the three-act play revolves, it features a composite text from a narrative common among Southeast Asian cultures–the celestial maiden, a half-woman, half-bird being who was deceived by a mortal. The UP Board of Regents (BOR) in its 1321st meeting on 27 October 2016 has given the green light to increase and extend the involvement of retired professors and professors emeriti in teaching, mentoring, research, creative work and administrative work in the university. With this approval, retired professors and professors emeriti may already serve as co-advisers, readers or panel members for master’s theses and PhD dissertations, and hold positions as professorial administrators and professorial K11-12 teacher trainers. Winner of Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning shortlisted for int'l awards

Almost a year after winning the 2nd Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning, Dr. Luis Sison of the College of Engineering is now vying for an international award in higher education pedagogy.  Sison was selected to advance in the Reimagine Education competition with his project “HIRIT: Higher education Institutional Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship,” the same entry that secured him the Gawad Pangulo title in December 2015. The entry, based on his MS-level course IE 298, helps students identify and pursue market opportunities that can be addressed by technology. 1st Biodiversity and Chemical Biology of Marine and Terrestrial Life in the Philippine Region Conference kicks off in Bohol, Philippines

The BCBMTP conference kicked off on October 16 with opening remarks from Governor Edgar Chatto of Bohol and DENR undersecretary Isabelo Montejo.  After welcoming the participants to Bohol, everyone was treated to a medley of songs from the Loboc Children’s Choir.  On October 17, the morning plenary lectures began with talks from Dr. Baltgazar Aguda of the Philippine Genome Center and Dr. Hiroyuki Ogata of Kyoto University.  Dr. Aguda’s talk focused on ecosystem stability, biodiversity, and genomics.  He highlighted the importance of food webs and keystone species and discussed how an ecological community can have overlapping genomes as a result […]
