Local and foreign experts from different fields of the earth sciences gathered to discuss new findings and innovations in an international symposium convened by the Rushurgent-Working Group (RWG) of the University of the Philippines (UP) National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS). The symposium, titled Crust-mantle Evolution in Active Arcs, was held last February 12 and 13, 2015 at Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City. Public Policy Journal relaunched after almost a decade

A new issue of Public Policy Journal (PPJ) was released again by the Center for Integrative and Development (CIDS) after eight long years. Three UP campuses to offer innovative program in marine ecosystems management

A ceremonial handshake of partners officially signaled the launch of UP’s newest ground-breaking program last January 9, 2015. The one-and-a-half year Professional Masters in Tropical Marine Ecosystems Management (PM-TMEM) will be offered jointly by UP Diliman, UP Los Baños and UP Visayas.  The brainchild of the UP Marine Science Institute, it uses a multidisciplinary, integrated systems approach to marine protected areas, and features field exposure and engagement with partners and practitioners. TACLOBAN DECLARATION urges the national government to focus efforts on mangrove protection

In the wake of Supertyphoon Yolanda, the Philippine government released PhP347 million for mangrove rehabilitation, with plans to allocate another PhP1 billion. However, ground assessments in Eastern Samar and Leyte showed the mangroves to be recovering from minimal to partial damage. Or they sustained no damage at all; only a few mangrove patches were totally devastated. These findings were shared during the Post-Yolanda Workshop: Mapping Yolanda’s impact on Philippine mangroves: impacts and recovery held in U.P.
