Reefs unlikely to recover from the effects of China’s construction activities in the Spratly Islands

For nearly two years, China has been reclaiming land in the Spratly Islands and it is causing permanent damage to the marine environment. The University of the Philippines Concert Chorus (UPCC), led by its artistic director/conductor Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama, copped the plum award—the Grand Prix —in the recently concluded 6th International Krakow Choir Festival Cracovia Cantans held from 11-14 June 2015 in Poland. UPCC received a statuette of Golden Polyhymnia (Muse of Choral Art) and a cash prize. Philippine representative UP ARCO triumphs in Bratislava music fest

The UP ARCO, the Philippines’ first-ever representative to the 7th Bratislava International Youth Music Festival, scored a feat when it topped the festival’s competition category in “String Orchestras up to 35 Years.” It was awarded the Silver Band after garnering 24 points, only one point shy away from the much coveted Gold Band. UP Diliman professor Alfredo Lagmay receives 2015 Plinius Medal

Professor Alfredo Lagmay, professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) National Institute of Geological Sciences and executive director of the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH), received the 2015 Plinius Medal from the European Geosciences Union for his “outstanding interdisciplinary natural-hazard research and natural-disaster engagement in the Philippines, particularly with respect to volcanic hazards, earthquakes, typhoons, landslides and floods.” Lagmay is a leading international scientific expert on natural disasters. He led the study on the geological hazards of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, which was used as scientific basis for the deliberations on the rehabilitation of the mothballed nuclear plant. […]
