Quarantunes was recently launched by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) for students and their friends to create music that expresses their hopes for the world and the future. The entries include at least two students whether as composer, instrumentalist, soloist, sound technician, video effects artist, etc. Out of 100 entries, 40 have been shortlisted and 4 entries are from UP students. Winning entries will be chosen by online voting. Please go to this link https://bit.ly/APRUQuarantunes. Voting is until 27 July 2020. Let us support our UP students. Cast your votes now!

They were chosen based on the quality and number of scientific works and publications, contributions to the advancement of science in general and in the Philippines, […]
The University of the Philippines is one of the eight universities shortlisted for the Times Higher Education (THE) DataPoints Merit Award in THE Awards Asia 2020. This was announced at yesterday’s Virtual THE Live Asia webinar. The DataPoints Merit Award looks at “Asian universities that could be considered ‘unsung heroes’ — those whose research excellence outpaces the recognition of their strength among the 10,000+ academics polled across the globe in [the] annual reputation survey.” THE Awards Asia seeks to recognize outstanding leadership and institutional performance in ten categories: Outstanding Leadership and Management Team, International Strategy of the Year, Teaching and Learning Strategy of […]
The University of the Philippines rose 30 places to 65th in the 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings, further securing its position as one of the leading universities in the region. It is one of the five Southeast Asian institutions and the only university from the Philippines that figured in the top 100. A total of 489 institutions made it to the rankings. UP has steadily moved forward in the rankings, from its 156th position in 2018 to 95th in 2019. Its climb in the regional rankings reflects its dramatic progress in the THE World University Rankings, where […]

Padama Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics College of Arts and Sciences UP Diliman Dilute Concentrations of Sb (Bi) Dopants in Sn-site Enhance the Thermoelectric Properties of TiNiSn Half-Heusler Alloys: A First-principles Study, Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 59(3): 035003, 2020 In this work, we studied the properties of thermoelectric materials based on Titanium-Nickel-Tin (TiNiSn) alloys. Thermoelectric materials are used to convert thermal energy to electric energy. They are used to harvest waste heat for energy efficiency and for cooling related applications. By performing computational investigations based on density functional theory, we showed that it is possible […]

To control/ minimize the occurrence of these diseases, synthetic drugs have been developed and administered to patients. However, these synthetic or “unnatural” drugs have caused some negative effects such as cough, skin rashes, taste […]

Josefina T. Dizon Institute for Governance and Rural Development College of Public Affairs and Development UP Los Baños Water Governance Framework in Sta. Cruz River Watershed, Laguna, Philippines, Journal of Environmental Science and Management, 22(1): 54-66, 2019 Deforestation due to illegal cutting, charcoal making, quarrying, mining, and destructive farming practices resulted to insufficient water supply for irrigation in the Sta. Cruz River Watershed. Since the National Irrigation Administration has transferred to the Irrigators’ Association (IA) the ownership of the irrigation system, the model proposes that the IA plays a central role in the management of the irrigation system. Thus, its leadership, […]
Gilbert R. Peralta Department of Mathematics and Computer Science College of Science UP Baguio Analysis of a Nonlinear Fluid-Structure Interaction Model with Mechanical Dissipation and Delay, Nonlinearity, 32: 5110-5149, 2019 The interaction between a solid and a fluid has been studied extensively in the past decades. Applications typically arise in several engineering designs and blood flow models. The research takes into account a model where there is a delay in the feedback control on the structural component. This entails that there is a time-lag for the control to be effective. It is known that delays can lead to instability. Nevertheless, the […]
