Ma. Theresa T. Payongayong is a professor at the Department of Philosophy of the UP Diliman (UPD) College of Social Sciences Philosophy (CSSP) where she teaches feminist philosophy, philosophy for children and Filipino philosophy, among others.
She was CSSP College Secretary from 2011 to 2014 and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2014 to 2017. She served as University Registrar (2017-2020) before being appointed as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) in 2020. After her term as VCAA in 2023, she served a brief stint as officer-in-charge of the UPD Office of the Chancellor.
While performing her duties as administrator, Payongayong continued to do scholarly work. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals; the most recent ones include Reflexive-Liberative Filipino Feminist Ethics in Kritike: An Online Journal of Philosophy (2020) and Programang Pananaliksik Tungo sa Multikultural at Katutubong Edukasyon in Talas: Interdisiplinaryong Journal sa Edukasyong Pangkultura (2020).
She has authored various textbooks, such as Sophia: An Introduction to Philosophy (Pilot Edition; 2018) published by the OB Montessori Publishing House, Inc. and Pamimilosopiya: Mga Pagdulog at Konsepto (co-authored with Perseville U. Mendoza and Jeanette L. Yasol-Naval; 2011) published by the UP Sentro ng Wikang Filipino. She has also written two modules for the general education course Ethics 1: Pantayong Pananaw (2018) and Pilipinolohiya (2018). In October 2009, her creative work titled Si Leo, ang Batang Lito, a philosophy for children story, received a special citation from the United Nations Population Fund.
Payongayong has attended and presented papers in many conferences and fora held in the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, the United States of America, and Japan. Among the recent papers she presented are From Babaylan Feminism to Feminist Philosophy (2019) at the 5th Congress of the Asian Association of Women’s Studies, Towards Improving Student Retention and Graduation Rates at the University of the Philippines (co-authored with Francisco N. delos Reyes and Evangeline C. Amor; 2019) at the ASEAN Quality Assurance Forum, and Training for the Nueva Ecija Senior High School Teachers: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person (2019) and Teachers Training on Philosophy for Children Program (2019) at Colleges and Universities Public Service Conference or CUPSCON 3.
To contribute to the commitment of the University to extension work and public service, she involved herself with Serepungan: Research Training and Partnership Program with Notre Dame of Midsayap College, Tabi-tabi Folkloradyo for DZUP 1602, research writeshops for Notre Dame University-Cotabato and Holy Angel University, and other extension programs and projects.
As a proof of her dedication to teaching, research, and public service, she received various grants and awards from both UP System and UPD. Among these are One UP Professorial Chair Award (2019-2021, 2022-2024), UPD Centennial Professorial Chair (2021), and UPD Centennial Faculty Grant (2016, 2018, 2022).
Payongayong completed her bachelor’s (Philosophy), master’s (Philosophy), and doctoral (Philippine Studies) degrees at UPD. She is a member of the International Association of Women Philosophers, Women’s Studies Association of the Philippines, Asian Association of Women’s Studies, Aliguyon-UP Folklorists, Inc., and Asosasyon ng mga Dalubhasa, may Hilig, at Interes sa Kasaysayan.
