Large language models offer many opportunities but also pose considerable challenges

With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the availability of data, and the advancement of hardware technologies, applications such as chatbots (like ChatGPT and Gemini) have been developed in the area of Natural Language Processing (NLP). These applications have been based on the use of what is known as Large Language Models (LLMs). There are many possible uses of LLM applications that have been highlighted by research publications and we should be aware of them so that sectors of our society are able to maximize on these possible benefits. But on the other hand, we should also be aware of what researchers say about the challenges and problems associated with these LLM usage.

This paper provides the scientific landscape of Scopus-indexed publications that focus on the opportunities as well as the challenges of using LLMs and NLP. This is significant in our world today due to the advancement on the technology side of chatbots such as ChatGPT that is an area of NLP on the use of LLMs. As we face these advancements, we should be aware of the tremendous opportunities brought by these LLMs, but also be wary of the challenges brought about by these new technologies. The basic building blocks of these research work are the results of previously-published researches that highlight the opportunities and challenges of LLMs and NLP.
